Graeme Murdoch
"I chose to study at Heriot-Watt because of the friendly, comfortable atmosphere on the campus. The academic staff are very welcoming and helpful, and the attractive surroundings, with the trees, loch and gardens giving a vibrant, country park feel rather than a dusty academic one, made me decide to come to Heriot-Watt.
"Another important feature of the campus is that all departmental buildings, lecture theatres, halls of residence and amenities are on-site. Moving away from home for the first time was a daunting prospect, however, knowing that I would be living in an inclusive campus and my accommodation was only walking distance from my classes made it all easier. Despite this, Heriot-Watt is just a short bus journey from the centre of Edinburgh, a beautiful city that also has a vibrant nightlife.
"Naturally, the most important thing when choosing where to study is the subject that you wish to learn. Chemistry is the basis of our existence and is present in our everyday life; from the simple frying of an egg to the uptake of oxygen in our bodies, this is all chemistry and the subject fascinates me.
"At Heriot-Watt the lecturers have many different research interests and all aspects of chemistry are taught, however, my interest lies primarily in that of medicinal chemistry and the wish that some day I can be part of producing new treatments for the ever-evolving diseases that are out there.
"But there is so much more about chemistry that interests me, like the curious behaviour of the transition metals, the arrangement of the molecular orbitals and the bizarre properties of electrons. The great thing about chemistry is that the subject is constantly growing and no-one will ever know everything, but I know I want to at least give it a go!"
