The Course

Third year is spent abroad as an MA International Business Management student. In fourth year, students choose from a range of specialist courses in the key functional areas of Business Management, including Marketing; HRM; Business Law; and Operations Management. This allows students to tailor the degree to meet their career needs and aspirations.

Rachael Sugden
"I strongly believe that the International Business Management MA offered by Heriot-Watt was the best undergraduate degree choice for me. Studying at Heriot-Watt gave me a comprehensive understanding of business management, giving me the confidence to believe in my capabilities when finding a job after graduation. Having to take a compulsory 3rd year abroad definitely enables graduates to stand out from peers, something which is very important given current market conditions. My 3rd year was spent studying at Sciences Po University in Paris which was the best year of my life. I found myself outwith my comfort zone, having to embrace a new culture and way of teaching. This experience broadened my business knowledge at an international level through studying diverse business subjects with peers who had a different interpretation and understanding of business management. I can now say I have friends from all over the world.
"I feel that a major advantage of studying business management at Heriot-Watt is that courses have a strong practical focus and are tailored to ensure that teaching is relevant to current business conditions rather than outdated theory.
"Additionally, having to study a broad range of business subjects in first year gives students a strong core understanding of each aspect of business and enables a sound basis from which to tailor their degree to particular interests, something which I found very simple to do when I came back for my 4th year. Furthermore, I find the lecturers at Heriot-Watt very approachable and unlike at some universities they actually take the time to get to know students as individuals. During my final year in particular I got a lot of support from my marketing lecturer, dissertation supervisor and mentor who really took the time to explore with me the options available to me after I finished.
"Now my first job after graduation is as a Marketing Executive at 4Social Work, a social care recruitment agency based in London. My workload is varied and exciting, I am currently organising a client event, creating a candidate loyalty scheme and coordinating social media marketing. Our company is expanding to Australia this year and I very much look forward to the challenge of developing an internationalisation strategy for the company’s further expansion into Canada next year."
Oliver Redpath
"I've worked in recruitment since graduating. Originally I worked for a niche search firm sourcing front office personnel for the world's leading investment banks. From our London base, this involved covering the UK, Parisian, Hong Kong and New York financial markets. I then joined TMP Hudson in Sydney, specialising in property finance and accounting.
"In 2004 I was asked to join Judd Farris to assist in the launch of their Australian practice. Due to its success I've been made responsible for opening our Hong Kong office, which will be used as a platform for expansion throughout Asia, and I'm now a Director of our Australian and Asian businesses."
