Overview
The Course
The BEng(Hons)/MEng programme aims to provide a broad education across the principal engineering disciplines and give students an appropriate depth of technical knowledge and understanding of the key engineering topics within architectural engineering. Students will also be provided with an awareness of managerial issues within the built environment and will gain an understanding of the framework in which architectural engineers function.
Career Prospects
We actively prepare students for work as professionals with our Industrial Advisory panel who guide us on employer needs. We also run a semester-long Industrial Placement course in fifth year. This means that graduates find employment with organisations like Ove Arup, Laing O'Rourke, DSSR, N.G. Bailey, Oscar-Faber and K.J. Tait.
A variant of this programme is available at the Dubai Campus.
Programme content
Level 1
The majority of courses studied by first year students are common across the discipline, and provide an introduction to the main themes of the programme. Subjects include: Construction Technology; History of the Built Environment; and Introduction to Design. Students also study Foundation Mathematics and undertake a residential study tour.
Level 2
Covers a range of courses in greater depth. Examples of these include topics such as: Acoustics and Architectural Design; Energy Use and Lighting.
Level 3
More specialist topics are covered, such as: Environmental Science and Human Responses; Design Software Applications; Safety Management; and Energy and Buildings. Students also undertake a Design Project in preparation for the Fourth Year Project.
Level 4
Students complete optional courses including: Environmental Modelling; Sustainable and Intelligent Buildings; and Spatial Studies. A design project includes a collaborative exercise with students throughout the School to produce a costed design for development. MEng students will complete a laboratory project, rather than a dissertation.
Fifth Year
The MEng programme aims to provide a greater in-depth knowledge and understanding and broadens the students? understanding of management issues and problem solving within industry. Students will produce a dissertation and choose courses including: Communications and Construction IT; Building Energy Management; Space Planning and Management; and Value and Risk Management.
Sophie Dickenson
"Applying to Heriot-Watt University was probably one of the best decisions I have ever made. Not only did I find a programme that I enjoyed and excelled at, I also met people that have become my best friends - a cliche but very true.
"The support I received from lecturers, friends and family, meant that my experience at Heriot-Watt was rewarding, fun-filled and full of memorable experiences. I became more confident (both in terms of assertiveness and in my academic ability) and improved my oratory, research and analysis skills which are all vital for my line of work.
"The five years of hard graft were all made worthwhile when I graduated (MEng with Merit in Architectural Engineering) and received an offer from DSSR Consulting Engineers to join their sustainability team.
"Working with DSSR has so far been everything it promised to be - challenging, engaging and satisfying. Discovering how theory fits in with real-life projects means that I am constantly learning, and ultimately solving problems is very fulfilling.
"My role includes research into sustainability issues such as renewable technologies and available grants, writing feasibility and sustainability reports as well as attending seminars and training courses. I thoroughly enjoy my job and look forward to a prosperous career within sustainability and building services fields."
