Overview
The Course
This degree is offered with a specialisation that may be selected at the start of the final year or upon registration.
Career Prospects
All our programmes provide a broad education as well as an appropriate measure of specialisation in Advanced Electronic, Electrical and Computer Systems. Graduates enjoy excellent employment prospects throughout industry, financial organisations, government and the professions and are well qualified to join research teams.
Programme content
Level 1
Circuit Theory, Digital Design, Mathematics, Computer Programming and Electronic Design form the core subjects. In addition, students choose an elective option from a list that includes Mechanics and Physics.
Level 2
Further study of Electronic Design, Digital Design, Embedded Programming and Mathematics is complemented by introductions to Signals and Electromechanical Systems. Again, supported by appropriate lab and project work.
Level 3
Emphasis turns to design synthesis. Subjects include Energy Systems, Analogue Electronics, Embedded Systems, Physical Electronics and Communications. The year is completed by working on a large team-based project, incorporating Digital and Software Design, Mechanics and Management.
Level 4
Students work on an individual honours project and select taught topics from a list that includes Embedded Systems, Sustainable Energy and Power Systems, Communications, Image Processing, RF Communications, Analogue Electronics and Microwave Techniques.
Why did you choose Heriot-Watt?
Heriot-Watt was one of the top universities in Scotland for the programme I wanted to study. I chose Heriot-Watt because when I visited on an open day I loved everything being on one campus and the staff were extremely friendly and welcoming.
What programme did you study and what made you choose it?
I studied Electrical and Electronic Engineering as I really enjoyed maths and physics at school. The degree provided me with a highly regarded qualification which helped me to get a well paid professional career.
What were your favourite aspects of the programme?
My favourite parts of the programme were the variation in activities, from individual projects to large group projects and theoretical work to practical lab work. The flexibility in the programme lets each student choose their own individual path to specialisation. There was something for everyone. As part of the programme I spent 6 months at an industrial placement in GCHQ.
Who would you recommend your programme to and why?
I would recommend the programme to anyone that has an interest in science and technology and is willing to work hard. The programme is very interesting and explores many areas of electronics but students will only get out of the programme what they put in.
What is your current job?
My current (graduate) job is with the Ministry of Defence in Bristol. I am on a 2 year training scheme with the MoD which will provide me with training in project management, equipment support, design and development and production before being placed in a permanent post.
What was the best thing about being a student at Heriot-Watt?
The best thing about Heriot-Watt was not only doing a good programme but being part of the sports union and playing sport every week for Heriot-Watt. This gave me skills that I can utilise in my job such as leadership and team working.
What would be your practical tip to a new student?
My top tip would be to enjoy your time at university making sure you always focus on your degree to the level required but also explore the other opportunities such as sports clubs, societies and unions. Get involved in as many activities as possible, especially in the first few years when the work load is not as heavy, but remember you are there for a reason and that is to get a degree.
Entry Requirements
The University offers as its normal entry routes:
- entry at Level 1, mainly for students with Scottish Highers (or similar),
- entry at Level 2, mainly for students with A-levels (or similar).
There is nevertheless considerable flexibility, depending on the level of qualifications, for entrants with A-levels to opt to enter at Level 1 and for Scottish students to enter at Level 2. Direct entry into Level 3 is also possible for students who already have certain HE qualifications.
Level 1 entry
- Scottish Highers BBBBC with Maths and Physics or Tech Studies
- GCE A Level BBB
- Irish Leaving Cert (Higher) BBBBB
- Scottish Baccalaureate pass with CC in Adv. Higher Maths and Physics
Level 2 entry
