Overview

The Course

The programme is organised in co-operation with senior representatives of the brewing, malting and distilling industries who are members of the Education Board of the International Centre for Brewing and Distilling, a major unit within the School of Life Sciences. It is designed to educate potential managers of the malting, brewing and distilling industries and to provide a full understanding of the science and technology of the processes involved from cereal farming to bottling and packaging. Successful completion allows exemption from the first professional examinations of the Institute of Brewing and Distilling.

Career Prospects

First appointments are likely to be in production or laboratory positions with brewing, malting or distilling companies. Through our extracurricular employability activities, students have the opportunity to undertake paid placements at each stage of their degree programme, developing broader skills and experience that is valued by today's employer.

Emma Wells

"I love the sea and I am a keen amateur diver. I liked the applied nature of the programme and wanted
a career in environmental management, probably in the water industry. After completing my BSc, I helped to organise a major diving expedition to South America, which won a national award presented by the Duke of Edinburgh.

"I returned to Heriot-Watt to research the use of seaweeds in environmental assessment for my PhD. This research combined with the applied first degree helped me get a job involved with the implementation of EU water policy in Northern Ireland."
